My Love Story 1944
February 14, 2008
We were friends in our teens. When he graduated in 1938, he decided to hitch hike to California to see his buddy who was a trooper out there. When he made it out there, he worked as a cook in a very busy hotel.
One day the hotel put up a sign outside that said “Join the Navy & See the World!” So he joined, he got sent to Hawaii, which he liked. However the Japanese started war in Pearl Harbor where he was stationed and working. He was right where they bombed Pearl Harbor. Luckily he was not hurt but was on strict orders to stay and fix the mess in the water and on the boats, he was there six years. In doing so we had many letters exchanged. He told his folks he cared for me, so they decided to get to know me, so invited me for many Sunday dinners.
“Spike” my boyfriend made a deal with his dad. One day his dad called me at work, I was a secretary in the Sales Aviation Davison at Harrison Radiator at the time. Said he and his wife were in Lockport and wanted to pick me up at five to go to their home in Burt for supper. “Ok,” I went. On the way spikes dad said he had to stop at the Newfane Bank of Business. So we got there and all three of us went in and Mr. Harvey Rhodes invited us into his private office. In doing so “Dad” said, “we are here to ask you if you care for my son enough to marry him. I was shocked- but said yes. So “Dad” said, “well I guess I have to open this box that Spike sent to Harvey. They opened it and there was a beautiful Diamond Ring! So “Dad” came to me and said, “guess I have to get down on my knees for my son to ask you for him if you will get engaged to him.” So I was engaged. We three decided, no supper but to take me home and tell my Mom and Dad in Wrights Corners. Well I got a phone call on the following Sunday from Spike in Pearl Harbor (May 1944).
He finally got a transfer from Hawaii to Washington D.C. with a month furlough to be home. He arrived the end of January 1945. We got reacquainted and he asked me out to dinner and a show in Buffalo to see the Ink Spots. We had a little time to think of getting married on that month leave. We decided on February 14th, by the way I was engaged on May 8th, 1944. So, the priest said no, as it was Lent so we picked Monday, February 5th, 1945 at St. John’s Church in Lockport, NY with Father Clancy! It happened to be my folks 30th wedding anniversary and also my Spike, his Grandmother’s 92nd birthday. So we sure had something to celebrate! We got married and went to Chicago for 10 days, home an them off to Washington D.C. to live, he was stationed in the Naval Gun Factory during the war and a few years later. We lived there for three years very happy. Moved back home and bought a house in Burt on some street where his folks lived and where he was raised. I lived in that house for 60 years. My dear husband died when we had twenty-three years of marriage. We had a son Michael and a daughter JoAnn, ten years apart. My name is Dorothy and my husband’s name was Albert.
